This is because we expect those we love to understand us better and act accordingly. When they let us down, it hurts more, making it harder to forgive them. On the other hand, when someone we’re not close to does something wrong, we tend to take it less personally. We might think, “They don’t really know me, so it’s not a big deal.” This distance helps us let go of the hurt more easily.
