The Silence Behind Every Smile
One fact about life is that no one walks through "life" without getting a few scars. Some of these scars are visible, some are etched into very tired eyes and trembling voices. Others, hesitation, or hidden beneath carefully rehearsed smiles and conversations that never reveal what the heart has survived. We often mistake silence for strength. We look at some of our friends or families who never complains, and we just assume that life has been gentle with them. We admire or envy the ones who always encourages others, never realizing they have simply learned to cry when and where no one can hear them.
The sincere fact is that no one is without regret. Everyone has mourned opportunities that slipped away, relationships that ended too soon, or dreams that quietly faded while life demanded something else. Regret is part of being human, and no one is without pain. For some, it comes through betrayal. For others, through loss, disappointments, loneliness, or the weight of becoming someone the world expects while slowly forgetting who they really are. And yet, not everyone cries out. They wipe their tears before daylight, answer every "How are you?" with "I'm fine," and keep showing up even when their hearts are exhausted. Simply because life has taught them that not everyone understands what one is going through.
So before you judge someone's calmness, remember that peace and silence are not always the same thing. Sometimes, to them, silence is survival, and other times, it is the only language left when words have become too heavy to carry. If there is one lesson worth holding onto, it is to "be kind".
That stranger you passed today may be carrying a regret they cannot undo. The friend who laughed the loudest may have spent the previous night crying. The person who never asks for help may be hoping someone notices without being told. Know that their silence is not the absence of suffering, but the evidence of a heart that has learned to endure whatever life throws at them.
Life becomes a little easier when we remember that every person we meet is fighting a battle we cannot see. So please, let us be kinder, gentle, more patient than the world teaches us to be.

The part about answering “I'm fine” when you're not really fine hit differently. Sometimes, people don't talk about what they're going through because they feel nobody will understand. We really need to be more patient and kind to one another.

ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful post. This serves as a reminder that everyone has a story we may know nothing about. May we learn to treat people with more love and understanding.
